Neck Cooler Ties & Water Absorbing Crystals

These large grain Super Absorbent Polymer water crystals hold about 400-times their weight in water and can be sewn into neck cooler ties, headbands and cooling vests. Their capacity to cool helps you beat the heat!

Follow these instructions to make your very own Cool Ties using our Super Absorbent Polymer.

Cool Tie Instructions

Cool Tie Super Absorbent Polymer Water Crystals:

The Cool Tie Water Crystals are available in three sizes (S=Small, M=Medium and L=Large).

  • Type S = 200 to 800 microns
  • Type M = 800 to 2000 microns (or 2 mm)
  • Type L = 2 to 4 millimeters

BEAT THE HEAT & CHILL OUT with an attractive Cool Tie Scarf!

These neck cooler water crystal scarves are an easy, fast project made from readily available materials. They make great gifts, school projects and give-aways. Let your imagination and creativity run wild with fabric patterns and colors!

The Cool Tie Water Crystals are nontoxic polyacrylamide granules of super absorbent polymer available from M² Polymer Technologies. These same water absorbing crystals are used to conserve water and nurture plants in arid conditions. They are concealed in the casing of a cotton neck scarf. When the scarf is soaked in water, the crystals absorb the water, expand, and turn into a crystalline gel. The cotton fabric absorbs water from the gel, and then the water slowly evaporates for a cooling effect. Scarves stay cool and moist for hours due to the polymer’s water-retaining properties and the slower evaporation rate than plain water alone.

Cool Ties & Water Crystals - FAQs

What are Cool Ties and how do they use superabsorbent polymer technology?
Cool Ties are personal evaporative cooling accessories containing superabsorbent polymer crystals sewn into a fabric sleeve worn around the neck or wrist. When soaked in water, the SAP crystals absorb and retain a large reservoir of liquid, which is then released gradually through evaporation over many hours. The evaporative cooling effect — the same thermodynamic principle as perspiration — carries heat away from the body, providing sustained, wearable cooling without electricity, batteries, or refrigeration.
Performance depends on ambient temperature, humidity, and airflow conditions. In warm, dry, low-humidity environments with good airflow, Cool Ties can provide effective cooling for many hours as evaporation is efficient. In high-humidity conditions, evaporation is slower and the cooling effect is more moderate. Cool Ties can be re-soaked as often as needed to restore full cooling capacity, making them practical for extended outdoor or industrial work.
Water Crystals are superabsorbent polymer granules that, when soaked in water, swell into large, clear, gel-like crystals. They are used primarily in: floral and event decoration (as a vase filler or centerpiece element for fresh and silk flower arrangements), container gardening and potted plant care (as a water-retention soil amendment), and educational demonstrations of polymer hydration chemistry.
Yes. Both products are made from non-toxic cross-linked sodium polyacrylate. Cool Ties are specifically designed for prolonged skin contact and are safe for extended wear. Water Crystals are non-toxic in handling but should not be ingested. Avoid rinsing large quantities of Water Crystals down drains, as they can cause pipe blockages.
Yes. Water Crystals mixed into potting soil function as an effective small-scale water retention amendment, releasing stored moisture gradually to plant roots and reducing watering frequency. They are particularly useful in containers and hanging baskets that dry out quickly. Use in moderate quantities, as over-application can make soil excessively water-retentive. For large-scale agricultural water retention, see AgSAP®.
A: Re-soak the Cool Tie in cool or cold water for 20-30 minutes to fully rehydrate the polymer crystals. For maximum initial cooling effect, soak in cold or ice water before first wear. Between uses, allow the Cool Tie to air dry completely to prevent mildew before storage. The polymer crystals can be hydrated and dried many times without significant loss of cooling performance.
